Should the 2 of Us Get Married 2.22.22

How about getting married February 22, 2022, that is, 2.22.22? The date looks appealing enough, and that’s why at least five couples have already signed up to be married at Grafarvogskirkja church, Reykjavík, during a drop-in, low-key wedding ceremony, offered by the church ministers, Morgunblaðið reports. They offered the same sort of service June 26, last year, when a total of 20 couples were married.

“Sometimes, people have been together for a long time, and they’ve discussed getting married but never gotten it done,” one of the church ministers, Guðrún Karls Helgudóttir, states. Dropping in at the church and getting things done is all it takes, she notes, and that’s why this service is being offered.

Couples need to book the wedding in advance by dropping the church ministers an email or by giving them a call. By the scheduled date, all necessary paperwork and certificates need to be ready.

“The date is an interesting set of numbers, easy to remember,” Guðrún remarks. Some people choose the day for that reason.” Drop-in weddings will be offered as well at Akraneskirkja church, in Akranes, West Iceland.

To the chagrin of many linguists, no Icelandic word has been found so far for a drop-in wedding. The term used is ‘drop-in brúðkaup’ — the latter word meaning wedding.

“We decided to stick with the drop-in term,” Guðrún states. “—everyone who wants to will understand it.”
